The Brilliance of Naturally Skilled & Talented Children

I am overjoyed at the attention being given today for children to learn skills/trades. As in past decades, if they didn’t excel in Algebra, Chemistry, a Language or History, they were categorized as a poor student whose parents didn’t work with them enough. I’m sure this practice made many students and parents feel inadequate.

As a single mom way back in the 90s, I wrote the following essay. I hope you enjoy it,❤ and that some mom/dad out there today will be sure their child’s talents/skills are part of their education. Here it goes………….

I never thought the day would come when I could actually park a car (my car) in the two-car garage under our home. I was blessed with two very skilled sons. Needless to say my garages were filled with tools, workbenches and anything that had wheels on it. Today, my sons are grown men, and I look around at my now empty garages affectionately remembering the frustration of hearing the sound of a rumbling, stick shift hot rod in the distance, hoping it would pass my house, but as usual, the engine would start cutting down, and it was inevitable, it was turning directly into my driveway and right into one of the garages. It was their latest find with wheels on it to be refurbished. Looking around at the garages now, I’m trying to convince myself that I’m not really missing bumping into a dirt bike, a quad, or a Harley. I don’t have to worry any longer about the thousands of dollars’ worth of tools that aren’t here anymore, there’s no sand on the garage floor to soak up oil leaks, and the idea of getting rid of mom’s bedroom above one of the garage bays so they can install a car lift is a distant memory. 🙂 I should be celebrating. However, at the risk of sounding foolish, every once in a while, I long for those times when my sons were boys. However noisy, those days of watching two young men use and hone their God-given talents were some of the most fulfilling days of my life. They amazed me then and make an incredible living today. We are all here for a different reason, each with our own uniqueness; whatever your child’s talent may be, allow it, and watch with wonder at what they can do.❤
